Renewable Energy

There are several forms of renewable energy in the marine environment including:

  • Offshore wind energy
  • Tidal energy
  • Wave energy (wave power)
  • Marine biomass (algae)
All are the focus of a considerable amount of research and development and Government/Public Sector incentives as we move towards renewable and non-polluting energy to compensate for the supply limitations and climate impact of fossil energy resources.
Two types of marine energies - marine biomass and salinity gradient are little known at the moment and opportunities exist to develop a greater understanding of them. The three TIME project regions are well placed to exploit this rapidly emerging marketplace.

Issues that need to be resolved include:
  • Damage to the ecosystem
  • Technological challenges
  • Mechanism resistance
  • Corrosion
  • Mechanical stress created by waves and currents
Encouraging businesses to work together across the three regions will create an opportunity to benefit from cross-border developments and initiatives in this increasingly important sector.
